Porcelain tile is deservedly in demand among consumers, because this material has not only excellent strength characteristics, it also elegantly and stylishly transforms an apartment, making it complete.

Manufacturing techniques of porcelain and ordinary tiles differ, which affects their characteristics. Porcelain tile is made from natural clay and processed under pressure at high temperatures. This makes the material of high strength, withstand changes in humidity and temperature. They produce glazed / unglazed porcelain stoneware.

Unglazed: dry pressing technology is used. The tile is painted over the entire thickness and is placed in rooms with high traffic.

Glazed: after pressing, a layer of colored glaze is applied, which is then literally baked to the base. It is used to create textures with imitation of natural materials (wood, marble, granite, woven fabric).

Color palette and tile sizes

When coloring materials dyes are added to the mixture during the production phase. This method of painting gives the porcelain stoneware the same shade throughout the thickness of the tile. A variety of shades of porcelain allows you to use it for walls, floor, as an apron for the kitchen:

  • granite texture imitates the pattern of natural granite. It has a high price, because getting a perfect monochromatic shade is expensive;
  • salt / pepper: a scattering of small patches appears on the monochrome surface. Thanks to a wide range of colors, these models harmoniously fit into any interior;
  • Textured imitation of complex patterns (granite wood or marble) makes granite an important piece of kitchen design.

The richness of the color palette makes it possible to embody both traditional and creative design solutions in the interior of the kitchen.

The quality of the front surface

The use of different technologies for the manufacture and processing of porcelain tiles make it possible to obtain tiles with different textured surfaces. After the burning step, the material is transferred to the grinding / polishing lines. For surface treatment, special formulations are used and as a result, different levels of specularity are created.

Polished - different perfectly smooth shiny surface. It is categorically not suitable for flooring, since minimal moisture makes the coating incredibly slippery and traumatic. Can be used as a kitchen apron, but care should be taken into account (cleaned with special tools).

Matt - not polished after firing. Perfectly proved as a floor covering. Due to its high strength and affordable price, it is the most sought-after tile type.

Satined - a layer of mineral salts is applied to the tile surface during firing. Thanks to technology, the coating acquires a "velvety" and muted shine.

Rectified - obtained by trimming the edges of the tiles. When finishing the surface creates the effect of a monolithic seamless coating.

Which porcelain tile to choose is up to the consumer. Choosing a model, be sure to take into account the nature of the purpose of the room.

The main advantage of the material - porcelain is equally good for facing both the floor and the walls. However, due to the different operating conditions, it is worth taking responsibly to choose the right tile types and to take into account the subtleties of installation.

Outdoor nuances

In order for the porcelain stoneware floor to preserve its flawless appearance for a long time, the following rules and technology for laying plates are observed:

  • the required number of elements is calculated, necessarily with a margin (8-10% of the floor space), since there will inevitably be waste: pruning, fighting;
  • the tile is laid on a leveled base, free from dust. Unevenness of the floor can lead to cracking of the surface;
  • pre-marking the floor will facilitate the installation process. When laying out tiles of different shades, one should try to maintain symmetry with respect to the sides of the room;
  • adhesive solution is applied evenly. Smooth and notched spatulas will ease the process. With the help of special plastic crosses not less than 3 mm thick, seams of the same width will be obtained;
  • for glue drying, it is necessary to withstand 3-4 days and then you can proceed to the final stage - grouting. The hue of the composition is selected individually. The most popular color is gray. Works are carried out by means of the rubber pallet. It is advisable to use silicone sealant around the walls and around the pipes. Remnants of glue, grout or sealant are easily cleaned with a damp cloth.

How to choose a porcelain tile for the floor in the kitchen so that the coating lasts a long time? It should be borne in mind that floor tiles are heavily loaded than wall tiles, so choosing a thick ceramic granite with enhanced strength and durability for the floor is better, and you can create an interesting floor design in the kitchen either by playing with colors or by laying tiles.

Kitchen wall decoration

New technologies (digital printing) create unlimited possibilities for creating "artistic" aprons. Porcelain tile for kitchen walls will become a real decoration of the room, if you fulfill the requirements of repair work:

  • the wall must be strong enough and have a dry, leveled surface. It is not recommended to mount porcelain tiles on gypsum boards;
  • surface marking is performed taking into account the height of the table top and cabinets. To create a fixing base set aluminum profiles;
  • glue is applied both on the tile and on the walls. Grout for joints choose with dirt-repellent and antifungal properties. The most suitable option is epoxy;
  • An important part is the design component. Rectangles laid out horizontally, visually expand the space. Vertical stacking will visually make the room taller.

For the apron of a tile it is worth choosing glossy porcelain tile. The shiny surface reflects light well and this effect visually expands the space. It is simpler to look after smooth tile, than for relief. The darkest shades are considered the most stamps (traces of splashes and stains remain on them). The most practical are white, beige-brown tones and surfaces that imitate stone or wood.

Recommendations for choosing tiles of porcelain

Manufacturers of building materials are constantly expanding the range of products and improve its quality. To buy materials was a joy, and the renovated premises for a long time kept an elegant look, remember the following tips.

On the reverse side of the tile there must be squares with sides of no more than 20 mm and a depth of about 3 mm. The main task of the reverse side is to ensure a strong adhesion to another surface. The presence of various grooves improves this connection.
